Welcome to the very first issue of Annie Quarterly! How special to have you here as I try something new. As Q1 wraps up, the notes I've been keeping already feel like good ash in the fire pit of an old me. Things move fast in the heart.

Q1 Concepts
1. What I want exists, but not with that attitude
For over two decades I’ve been “looking” for something* with a bad attitude. Big surprise, I wasn’t finding it. In Q1 I lost the attitude, and there it was. What else has a bad attitude hidden from me?????
*good pants for tall freaks (me)
2. Guardedness is OUT
I can become so witheringly sunblazingly certain of my Self that everything I don't want just bounces off me. BOING. What’s a threat to the sun?
3. Being grounded is literal and metaphorical, like a poem
We're getting the energy dowwwn from around the ears. I've been seeing a postural restoration specialist who puts shims under my shoes like I'm a wobbly table. Then my brain understands the ground with every part of my feet, and I walk like I have a new skeleton. Sounds fake I know - not fake not fake. Mind on the ground!
Q1 Highlights
📖 Essay: “Beware the man whose handwriting sways like a reed in the wind” - Anne Carson
The great AC writes about her Parkinson’s boxing class and how to draw a line that is not stupid. If you haven’t read her 2024 book Wrong Norma - oh my god
🎵 Song: “I Miss You” - Bjork
Every time I forget that I’m a big whole person with a lifeforce to wield, Bjork pulls up in a convertible - no, a swan - no, an ice cream dish - honking
🍿 Movie: Dick [1999]
Artful, sharp, gorgeous, hilarious. An All The President’s Men parody that transcends parody. Like The Big Lebowski if The Dude was two eighth grade girls. Also the most affectionate depiction of being a girl in eighth grade I’ve seen since - wouldn’t you know it - Eighth Grade (2018). Why is no one talking about this movie? I had to find it by trawling Kirsten Dunst’s filmography??? Giggled nonstop, A+
Q1 Obsession
Re: Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”
The first 3 times I heard it: Aw, this is a fun song
The next 5 times I heard it: This song freaking rules
It comes on during Zumba at the YMCA: I’ve blasted into outer space and I can see the face of god
It plays in my headphones for the 67th time at 2pm on a Tuesday: *crying because everybody at the bar is us and the bar is planet earth and the 2 to the 3 to the 4 is everything Happening and whiskey is being alive and last call is coming for us all and I’m so lucky to exist at the same time as this song and consciousness is a miracle*
Q1 Stills
from They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? [1969, dir. Sydney Pollack, cin. Philip H. Lathrop] - omfg the PALLID skintones, the GORGEOUS blocking, the SURE light, JANE Fonda

Annie’s 5 Principles of Beauty
What if everything about Annie's World operated under the regime of beauty? Simplicity, balance, breathability, horse sense, and umami. That goes for the work itself, ofc, but also systems, spaces, and communications.
⚪️ Simplicity
Reduce it, like a sauce.
⚖️ Balance
DO and BE taking turns.
Each load-bearing element must be whole-assed.
🌬️ Breathability
Thoughts need space to expand.
Legroom for let’s see if -
Quiet on set!!! there’s a breeze ~
🐴 Horse Sense
A steady clip-clop through the weeds.
Intellect needs intuition.
Use your checking stick.
🫖 Umami
Depth that deepens over time.
Satisfaction spiraling outward.
Particular YUM
See ya later
I’ll send us off with Q1’s big win. I understand sports fans now. I was baptized by every single body partying on Broad Street. When the birds win you walk around flapping your arms like a big eagle. There’s a chant AND a victory song. I’ve never felt anything like it, big in my heart, our heart. Me is we when the Eagles win, the whole city is one person. Here’s some chaotic 35mm snaps:

Thanks for being here, what a treat.
Sending well wishes to you and yours -

Your friend,

P.S. Re: My First Newsletter - what do we think about it? Questions, comments, concerns, beef???? Tinkering. RSVP
P.P.S. “My First Newsletter” reminds me of Fisher-Price which reminds me of the PXL-2000 camera that emo film student Ethan Hawke uses in Hamlet [2000] (best movie) - a toy camera for babies (?) that records to AUDIO CASSETTE and looks cool as hell. You guys seen this? I want one
P.P.P.S. Item #1 in my Principles of Beauty is the one that’s always clotheslining me. I’ll crawl across any desert dragging all 3 of my postscripts behind me. xo
